Get Messy The Season of Fairy Tales

Get Messy The Season of Fairy Tales

In this blog post I'm rounding up some of my favorite pages from my art journal that I created during Get Messy's season of fairytales.

Get Messy Art Journal is an art journaling program that is a school, art playground and family. We are a group of like minded art journalers who have come together under this art form to learn, share, practice our skills and push past our creative limits with hopes to inspire. Our community values consistent creating, encouragement and suppport and trying new things. We would love to have you join us as a member of Get Messy Art Journal.

Week 1:

This week starts a new season at Get Messy- The Season of Fairy Tales! I’m excited for this one, it’s going to be a lot of fun.

My friend Misty and I did a sort of mini collaboration for this season- I sketched out a mushroom for her and she turned it into an accordion journal and shared the tutorial on the Get Messy blog.

Inspired by that, I created a mushroom journal as well. I made this double sided album. It’s basically 2 pamphlet stitched journals that I adhered together going in opposite directions.

Now onto my pages for the week. For this season, my plan is to re-write some classic fairy tales into versions that I like better, we’ll see if I make it through the whole season doing this or not though. 🙂 I started with Little Red Riding Hood, because that one is my all time favorite.

I also created this page based off of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

I think I’ll be filling this journal up with a lot of character design illustrations, they’re really fun to do!

Week 2:

First up, I have my space princess page. So far in this journal I have been doing fairy tale retellings, where I put a twist on a classic fairy tale, however this is not one of those. For this spread I was thinking more along the lines of “if I were a princess, and that’s how I ended up with this:

I actually drew the girl our first and then found the quote by Elizabeth Gilbert and I think they go together perfectly!

This week Riet shared a fun tutorial on the Get Messy blog about adding windows and flaps to your pages, which is what inspired me to add in this cut out window. I really love it.

Week 3:

As a part of the Get Messy Creative Team, this was my week to share a tutorial on the private Get Messy blog. I shared a tutorial on how to design fairy tale elements (mushrooms, crystals, etc) AND a free printable.

Here is my page using the fairy tale elements I designed.

My other page for this week is inspired by Maleficent.

The green vellum on the left side is actually a flap that flips up, and then you can see Maleficent’s wing, which I heat embossed with Black Lame embossing powder, so it sparkles. 🙂

Week 4:

I really love both of the pages I created this week, and it’s always good when that happens, right? 🙂

My other page for the week is actually inspired by the story book collaboration that Riet and I created earlier this year. Riet’s book was about a girl with swan wings, and I enjoyed exploring that idea a second time on my page below.

My favorite book series when I was a teenager was about a girl with wings.

Week 5:

This week was a super busy one for me! I'm visiting Taylor (My sister!) this weekend, so I spent the majority of the week finishing up some other projects and getting ready to travel.

So, only one page from me. I like it though!

It’s inspired by Wendy Darling. I loved the Peter Pan movie when I was growing up.

I’m super thrilled with the background on this page.

Week 6:

I was out of town for the beginning of the week (visiting my sister, Taylor! love!), which means that I didn’t get in my studio until Wednesday. So I only have 1 page to share for this week.

The right side of the page is actually a piece of palette paper I had used, and then adhered down here in my journal. I love the look.

It may be hard to tell, but this page is actually inspired by Mulan. 🙂

This was the last week in the Season of Fairy Tales in the Get Messy community, however I still have a few empty pages in my journal that I want to fill up, so I will still be creating magical art for the next couple of weeks. 🙂
